Mammals

In addition to European beaver (see beaver page), the Foundation is involved with, or interested in, a range of mammals, particularly with regard to their role in the functioning of natural ecosystems or with the need for reintroduction or translocation in the UK Traditional Cattle

We have been very involved in extolling the positive values of using native cattle to benefit nature conservation, especially within woodlands. See Cattle Biodiversity Document. We are a great supporter of increasing the numbers and range of traditional cattle because we believe they are essential for habitat restoration and the functioning of ecosystems in the UK. We encourage the formation of a 'wild' herd of Highland Cattle in the Highlands.

Lynx

We have been a champion of restoring the Lynx to Scotland and consider it to be an important and essential step in ecological restoration. We made a major contribution to this debate, by providing funds for David Hetherington to start examining this project, which led on to him completing his PhD at Aberdeen University on 'The feasibility of reintroducing the Lynx to Scotland'. Further information will be provided here in the future.

Red Squirrel

We have examined three cases where landowners with suitable woods, but isolated from the present squirrel range, have wished to translocate squirrels. Our advice was that these cases would make a real contribution to red squirrel conservation. Following our writing of a detailed feasibility report, it is hoped that SNH will grant a licence to carry out a translocation project later this year. Watch this space!

Elk (Moose)

We continue to be involved, mainly through lectures and media comment, in the possibility of restoring lost species such as elk.

Wolf

We continue to be involved, mainly through lectures and media comment, in the possibility of restoring lost species such as wolf.

Brown bear

We continue to be involved, mainly through lectures and media comment, in the possibility of restoring lost species such as brown bear.

Wild boar

We are involved in the use of wild boar for habitat manipulation in fenced enclosures and believe they are important in ecology restoration. We are also interested in escaped populations in the UK.
