Tom

Tom is the name we have given to a young male golden eagle we have satellite tagged this year in the Eastern Cairngorms at a secluded nest. Eaglets in this eyrie do not see walkers passing by, so we now have chicks from 'quiet' and 'busy' eyries for our study of the cultural behaviour of golden eagles in the Cairngorms National Park. This is a successful pair of eagles, which regularly rear young.

On 28th June, we went to the nesting site in the evening and caught the young eagle. He was ringed ZZ1417 and was fitted with a transmitter number 84132. Lorcan O'Toole climbed down into the eyrie and placed back in the nest before we departed. He was in excellent condition, but probably two weeks later than the Glenfeshie chick Angus. Measurements: wing 340mm; tail 140 mm; bill 31.75 x 24.47mm; tarsus 13.0 x 16.9mm; hind claw 38.63mm; spread foot 113mm. Alma's measurements for comparison: wing 465mm; tail 230 mm; bill 38.7 x 27.56mm; tarsus 16.37 x 18.29mm; hind claw 49.64mm; spread foot 149mm. Males are smaller (at this age the wing and tail feathers are not yet fully grown).
